Seabed Testing at Gzira

We are thrilled to share an exciting update on our latest project in collaboration with Infrastructure Malta. As part of an ongoing initiative to upgrade the quay at Gzira, we are conducting comprehensive seabed testing to ensure the material to be dredged from the area is safe and meets all relevant environmental standards.

The seabed testing is a vital phase in this project, as it allows us to assess the material to be removed from the seabed and determine whether it meets established chemical thresholds. This analysis will help decide if the material can be safely disposed of at an approved offshore site, as per local and international guidelines.

The objective of this testing is to evaluate the chemical composition of the seabed material and ensure it aligns with strict environmental criteria. If the material passes the threshold, it will be disposed of offshore. However, if the material does not meet these environmental safety standards, we will explore alternative options to handle it in a responsible manner. This approach helps maintain our steadfast commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible development.

We are pleased to announce that after a thorough review of the land contamination assessment report, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) has concluded that material from all three testing stations meets the necessary criteria for offshore disposal. This is a significant achievement, as it confirms that the dredged material can be safely disposed of at sea without posing any threat to the marine environment.

This crucial step lays the groundwork for the next phases of the quay upgrade project, allowing us to proceed with confidence while ensuring that we minimize the environmental impact of our activities.
